I've
always liked fantasy--high fantasy, low fantasy, alternative history, urban
fantasy, all of it. And I've always liked romantic elements in my books,
from full-on romances to romantic subplots. I'd been kicking around a few
ideas about vampires for a few years. I liked the scariness of old fashioned
vampires, and I like the sexy-and-not-always-deadly vampire that's more common
today, but there seemed to be a hole in vampire literature where the
scary-but-redeemed vampire lives. If a vampire can kill people but
doesn't really need to, he isn't really much darker than a human with homicidal
urges. I imagined a situation in which a vampire would have to kill to
live, at least much of the time, and the rest of the story spiraled out from
there.
In
this case, what would an ethical vampire be seeking? What would his goals
be, and how would he go about them? And what would an ordinary human
think, taken along for the ride?
I also
decided to make the vampire's magic...non-magical. By knocking the
fantastical upside the head with a science stick, it allowed a world in which
there could be change in a way in which "regular" magic doesn't
allow. A world that is rocked by disruptive technological revolution is a
great background for characters to act against, and it allows you to repeatedly
return everything on its head.
Aethereal
Bonds was the world that resulted from these thoughts--with not just vampires
but weres, demons, and faes, too. It's both familiar and new.
